Phytochemical insights into Amaranthus species: COX and LOX modulation as a therapeutic strategy

Author(s):

Natalia Petrovna Vasilieva

Abstract:

Amaranthus species, renowned for their nutritional value, have also been identified as potential therapeutic agents due to their ability to modulate key enzymes involved in inflammation. This study delves into the phytochemical profile of Amaranthus and its impact on cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipoxygenase (LOX) pathways, which play significant roles in inflammatory diseases. A comprehensive review of current literature reveals that compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, and phenolic acids present in these species demonstrate notable COX-2 and LOX inhibition. This paper evaluates the mechanistic action of these phytochemicals, emphasizing their promise as natural alternatives to conventional anti-inflammatory drugs. Despite encouraging findings from in vitro and animal studies, further clinical validation is required to establish their efficacy and safety in human therapies.
